An interview with DJ Mag (UK) after they'd featured the release party of his new CD. They quote: “San looks certain to go far. Comparison can easily be drawn with fellow Dutch Exports like Armin Van Buuren & Tiësto”.

How did you get your residency at Elevate?
I got a request to play the club quite some time ago, but it was only after playing the club for the first time that I realised that India -of all places- had a ‘Superclub’ to offer! The crowd as well as the Management reacted really positive to my sets and after two performances they offered me to become their International Resident. Since I think the club has amazing potential, I accepted on a monthly basis.

How did the Elevate approach you? And why did you chose the Elevate club to records your latest cd?
This is my third mixed compilation and when Fektive Records (NL) asked me for my ideas on the CD, I instantly thought of the Elevate Club. Surely since it’s one of my residencies, but also because I firmly believe the club has a massive potential. Elevate was dying for an opportunity to introduce their club to the world and this is a perfect way to do it (the booklet therefore is packed with pictures from the club). Everything the club has to offer is just right, from the sound (hydraulic dance floor) to the lights to the incredible design (same designers who did the Fabric in London) to the employees. They deserve all the attention they get (the club was voted #1 Indian Club 2 times already) and I strongly believe that their brand is strong enough to travel boundaries and even conquer harts of clubbers worldwide.

How do you view the dance scene in india?
The dance scene in India is a promising one even though electronic music is very new in India. Apart from the major cities like Delhi, Bombay and Chennai, you won’t hear house music at all! The majority of the Indian people (India has a population of about 1.000.000.000 people) are into traditional Indian music and probably will be for ever. But the youth in the major cities of India are open to new kinds of music and the last few years the house scene has been growing rapidly in this age group.

I heard you had some contractual problems a few years back. Can you tell me a little bit more about that?
When you’re young and naive you can make some mistakes and I made quite a major one by signing an exclusive record deal for 6 years. I thought it was 3 years, but since I didn’t release the amount of records stated in the contract I had no choice but to finish the contract. Another problem I had was that any project name I used became property of the record label. So during those years I used synonyms for my productions from which ‘Solid Sessions’ is probably the most known (Solid Sessions – Janeiro was my best selling single so far).

You can’t imagine how it feels when your original productions have been featured on compilations from Paul Van Dijk, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Sasha, John Digweed, Deep Dish, etc. and the majority doesn’t realise it’s you!

But hey…A little more then a year ago I finally finished my contract and now is the time to start releasing under my own name; SAN.

Tell me something more about Fektive Records..
Fektive records (www.fektive.com), is a very cool team of people who have been active in the dance scene for a long time. Fektive itself is a new label that focuses on tech house, progressive and trance music. Their goal is to push talented artists alongside with established names. I was very pleased when they asked me to mix a new cd for them. They are based in Holland and I think that they can go a long way!
