1. How do you go about building a good night?
You have to rely on your musical instincts when dj’ing. That’s why I never prepare my dj set. Surely I know the music I’m carrying, but I will let the vibe of the people and the club inspire me in my choice of records. I think building a good night goes hand in hand with the clubbers. If they are having a good time, I get energy from that and I will start to play better.
2. What distinguishes a superstar DJ from a regular one?
The ability to read a crowd and take them on a musical journey with exclusive music that is not available to the mass public yet (promo’s). And also the way they interact with the public, the way they look, act, etc. Basically their whole attitude.
3. What age did you start Djing and at what point were you convinced this is what you wanted to do for the rest of, or at least the most part of, your life.
I started buying records when I was about 15 years old. I tried since then to string records together, but it was only until I was 17 that I started performing at parties from friends and little clubs. At the time I will still studying and there were only a few dj’s at the time who were making enough money to go around. After I finished my studies, at the age of 23, I said to myself that I would never forgive myself if I wouldn’t have tried to make it as a dj. 2 years later I also started producing and at the age of 26 I produced a hit record, which made it to the top 10 in 11 countries (Solid Sessions – Janeiro) and from that moment on my dj career took an International turn.
4. You’ve been touched by the smiling faces of people in India despite the poverty. Have you had any chance at all to interact with that segment of the population? Would you want to, at any point?
I haven’t had the chance to interact with them really, because their English is most of the times very poor. But I do try to open up to them with all kinds of well meant gestures, so I would certainly want to if I get the chance. Helping others is something that gives me great pleasure.
5. Can a DJ make a political statement?
Yes they can and I think that they should try and do it more. I personally feel bad about the fact that the scene which I am part of has to deal with so much negative publicity. I love my job, but that doesn’t mean that I’m a party animal. I don’t take drugs and I barely drink alcohol and I still have a good time! So who needs drugs anyway…
6. I’ve read you hear melodies in dreams sometimes, like writers get ideas on the pot. The question is where does your inspiration come from (to produce tracks)?
It can come from many things such as a good night when dj’ing. A great review in a magazine. Nice messages from fans, etc.
7. What side of the piracy debate are you on? There’s been a big issue with licenses for DJs, especially in Mumbai.
Piracy has already caused problems for many record labels of which some even resulted in bankruptcy. I guess people don’t realize that record labels are here to distribute music and not the internet. The internet is a good thing, but people should pay for the music they listen to. The costs for downloading a new song from I-Tunes, is really low. It’s not that Madonna doesn’t have enough money, but it’s the people that write music for their living.
8. You’ve played at clubs across the world, what does it take to make a club one of the best…
Most important are the people, they are responsible for the vibe of the club. Also the sound system and the interior are very important. And don’t forget the acts/dj’s who are performing at the club. Besides all that everything falls and stands with the promotion.
9. What is the music closest to your heart…
Music that comes from the heart… It can be anything… It’s not that I only like house music, most certainly not. I listen to all kinds of music and I can even hear some influences from Indian Music sneaking into my new productions.
